28/11/2024

At this year’s 5th Athens International Arbitration Forum, held as part of the Athens Arbitration Days, our Senior Associate Claire Sergaki explored the profound impact of economic sanctions on international arbitration.

In a thought-provoking session, she highlighted the challenges sanctions pose for parties, counsel, arbitrators, and arbitration institutions, raising critical questions about their roles and responsibilities. Claire examined the practical hurdles in obtaining licenses required for the payment of fees in arbitral procedures and for the appointment of arbitrators in cases involving sanctioned parties. She also addressed the broader implications of sanctions for tribunal jurisdiction and the arbitrability of disputes.
