Anna Ntionia on Environmental Permitting and Sustainable Development at the 5th Energy Law Conference

08/05/2025

A few days ago, our energy partner, Anna Ntionia, participated in a highly successful conference organized by NOMIKI BIBLIOTHIKI on Energy Law.

Her presentation focused on the development of the case law of the Greek Council of State regarding environmental permitting for electricity generation units.

Key topics included:

– The interaction between installation and operation licenses and the Environmental Terms Approval (AEPO),

– The conditions for establishing energy stations near sites of historical significance,

– The automatic extension of AEPOs,

– The sufficiency of environmental terms in cases where there is a lack of scientific literature on the protection of specific biocommunities and the potential impacts of energy projects on them.

The decisions discussed consistently emphasize the critical importance of applying the principle of sustainable development, ensuring that energy investments can progress efficiently while maintaining rigorous environmental protections—thereby fostering a stable, predictable legal framework that supports both economic growth and responsible stewardship of natural resources.
